Sat Apr3: 2010 GRAND SLAM and Writing Intensive

Hey ABQ Slam fam and fans, we have the biggest show of the year and a hella good writing intensive on tap THIS SATURDAY!

SATURDAY NIGHT the top 10 performance poets in the 505 battle for the coveted Albuquerque City Championship as well as a spot on the 2010 ABQ National Poetry Slam team at the 2010 ABQ GRAND SLAM on SATURDAY, APRIL 3 at the OUTPOST PERFORMANCE SPACE.

Among those in the running are Jessica Lopez, Emily Landis, Zack Kluckman, 2009 ABQSlams champ Damien Flores, 2009 Youth champ Reed Bobroff, 2010 Haiku Dethmatch champ Tracey Dahl, former ABQ team members Christian Drake, Joseph Andres Romero and Hakim Bellamy as well as Khalid Bunsunni. Opening the slam will be sacrificial poets Danny Solis (the current ABQ Slam Poet Laureate) and 2010 ABQWOW champ Brooke von Blomberg. 


The slam will be hosted by HBO Def Poet Tim Stafford. Stafford is a Chicago-based poet who is part of the performance poetry duo Death From Below, which was featured on HBO's Def Poetry show. He is a former Chicago Grand Slam champion and currently curates the Chicago "Mental Graffiti" poetry slam series. He is also the editor of "Learn Then Burn" an all ages anthology set to be released in May 2010 by Write Bloody Publishing. 

Also on the show will be DJ Smartiepants and sorbet poet Faustino Villa.

It'll be a dizzying night of poetry and performance. Tickets are available in advance through the Outpost Box Office. Poets in the ABQ Metro area have been competing and qualifying for the past seven months, accumulating points towards the ABQ Grand Slam, which is being co-produced by ABQSlams and the Outpost.

The top four from the Grand Slam will represent Albuquerque at the international NATIONAL POETRY SLAM poetry slam in St. Paul, Minnesota. in August 2010. The ABQ GRAND SLAM also kicks off fund raising for the ABQ City Team, which is also looking to raise $6,000 to pay for the trip to Minnesota.

BUT, before all that...

SATURDAY AFTERNOON the Duke City Youth Poetry Collective, in partnership with and Warehouse 508, presents its monthly Writing Intensive with HBO Def Poet and Chicago slam champ TIM STAFFORD.

Tim will be leading a writing workshop – "Personalizing the Political: How to write political poetry that isn't a rant, and how to make it funny." -- for youth and adults Saturday, April 3 at Warehouse 508, the new youth arts space in Downtown Albuquerque.

The first 15 youth writers to RSVP (reserve a spot) for the workshop get in for free. Adults and additional youth will be asked to pay $10 (we will go on a sliding scale for those who can't afford the $10.)

This is a workshop you CANNOT miss!
